A Day For Small Businesses To Stand Out In The Crowd (Earn for tricks)

After Black Friday has come and gone, a new shopping day arrives: Small Business Saturday.
Small-business owners hope that after you've spent time at the big-box stores and the mall, you'll spend money with the mom-and-pops in your neighborhood.
The idea for the day came out of a committee at American Express in 2010, after the depths of the recession. AmEx President Ed Gilligan loved the idea of creating a new holiday.
"We did make it up, but we didn't make up the reason why it exists," Gilligan says. "I heard this idea of Small Business Saturday and about American Express working to help create movement. It was like a light shining down on me that said, 'This was the best idea I've heard in a long time.' "

Gilligan won't say how much AmEx spends to help small business promote the day. American Express, whose fees are fairly expensive for small businesses, uses the day in part to mend bridges with mom-and-pops who've often shunned the card.
American Express does benefit from Small Business Saturday, Gilligan says, but small stores benefit even more. What's more, the holiday has grown well beyond AmEx's leadership.
Last year customers spent $4.5 billion on the Saturday after Thanksgiving — although they likely spent about 10 times that on Black Friday. The Department of Commerce promotes the day on its calendar, and chambers of commerce and small-business bureaus around the country have adopted the day.
For the past two years, President Obama has celebrated Small Business Saturday by taking his daughters to D.C.-area bookstores.
"It's like watching a snowball go downhill," Gilligan says. "It is gaining momentum. It is bigger than American Express."
Business owners like Kathryn Lundeen, who runs Lundeen's gift store in downtown Culver City, Calif., say they are grateful for Small Business Saturday.
"I don't care that it's a made-up day," Lundeen says. "I love it. I think it's great for us. I think it has really helped us."
Lundeen says that over the past few years she's seen the day's sales totals get bigger and bigger. She says it reminds customers about her store and helps build momentum for her most important time of year.
"Now is the time when I'm most broke, and in two weeks I will have the most money," she says. "Three weeks in December make my whole entire year."
Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst with the NPD Group, says Small Business Saturday offers an introduction for many small businesses, but it's up to the owners whether the day is make or break.
"Small Business Saturday is a good chance, a good opportunity, for the small main-street retailer to ... put a really good impression in front of the consumer," Cohen says. "If they don't, it'll just fizzle away."

Michigan, Ohio State fight results in three ejections

An on-field scrum between several Ohio State and Michigan players resulted in the ejections of two Buckeyes and one Wolverine.
Less than a minute into the second quarter with the Wolverines up 21-14, a melee erupted with multiple punches thrown following an Ohio State kickoff return. Michigan linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone was ejected after ripping off Ohio State kick returner Dontre Wilson's helmet. In obvious anger, Wilson then struck Michigan defensive back Delano Hill in the facemask with an open hand and was also tossed.

Ohio State starting right guard Marcus Hall was also ejected for throwing a punch at Michigan's Keith Heitzman. Upon leaving the field, Hall gave fans the double-bird treatment.
Though this rivalry game has been known for some chippiness, the officials kept things from getting out of hand the rest of the way.
It's unclear whether any of the three players will face further discipline. The Buckeyes are slated to play Michigan State in next week's Big Ten championship game, while the Wolverines are bowl-eligible.

Glasgow helicopter crash: Police appeal for Clutha tragedy video

Chief Constable Sir Stephen House confirms eight deaths following the helicopter crash

Police have appealed for any video, audio or photographs taken before or after a helicopter crashed into a busy Glasgow pub killing eight people.
Three people inside the helicopter and five people inside The Clutha were killed after the Police Scotland aircraft came down at 22:30 on Friday.
A further 14 people are being treated for "very serious injuries".
A major investigation is under way. Prayers for the dead will be said at a service at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday.
Officers from Police Scotland's major investigations team have asked for any footage of the incident or surrounding areas to be emailed to the dedicated address: glasgowhelicopterincident@scotland.pnn.police.uk
The investigation will run in parallel with one being run by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
A total of 32 people were hurt in the crash - 14 of them seriously.
Dr Jennifer Armstrong, medical director at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said 18 of the injured people had now been treated and discharged.
scene of crash The emergency services remain involved in a "search and recovery" operation
"The main injuries we have seen include chest injuries, head injuries, long-bone fractures and lacerations," she said.
It is thought that about 120 people were in the pub at the time of the crash.
Many were rescued or escaped but others were trapped by a collapse on the left-hand side of the building.
The three occupants of the helicopter who died were two police officers and a civilian pilot.
A significant number of personnel from Police Scotland, The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service are still at the scene.
Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House told a news conference on Saturday afternoon that they would remain there for some time.

AT THE SCENE

Strange to walk through Argyle Street to the scene and see so many people doing their Christmas shopping just a few hundred yards from the scene.
The King Street car park next to the scene is full of cars, and buses are passing just 100 yards from the cordon.
There is no debris on our side of the cordon - it's hard to believe what has happened just a few yards away.
We can see the blue and green tarpaulins on top of the roof of the pub, but there is no activity on that roof.
On our side of the cordons, a pack of around 40 journalists and photographers are taking statements from eyewitnesses and waiting for news.
He said: "This is a complex and ongoing rescue operation. It will not be a quick operation. It is a very complicated and indeed dangerous scene."
Chief Constable House said the operation would go on "for many days yet".
He paid tribute to the emergency service personnel who were working at the scene and the people of Glasgow who disregarded their own personal safety to help survivors in the aftermath of the crash.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told the same news conference that the increased death toll from the crash was "news that everybody today has been both dreading and expecting".
"Our hearts go out to everyone who has been bereaved. It is impossible to imagine the grief and loss that they are experiencing," she said.
"They should know that the thoughts and prayers of everyone across the city, and indeed across Scotland, are with them at this unimaginably difficult time.
Ms Sturgeon also praised the courage and fortitude of the emergency services and people of Glasgow in the aftermath of the crash.
She added: "I think we were all moved last night by the way in which those who were in and around the scene did everything possible to help and the outpouring of concern and kindness today, I'm sure, will be a comfort to those affected."
Ms Sturgeon's colleague, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, will attend a special service at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday to offer prayers for the dead and injured.
  • A large area of the city centre has been cordoned off
  • Mass held at St Andrew's Cathedral in city for those involved in crash and emergency services involved in response
  • Council has cancelled St Andrew's Day celebrations in George Square as a mark of respect
  • A minute's silence was held ahead of the Falkirk v Rangers match
  • Flags are flying at half-mast on Scottish government buildings
  • Injured were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Western Infirmary and the Victoria Infirmary
  • Police Scotland Casualty Bureau number is 0800 092 0410 - for those concerned about relatives
  • Glasgow City Council has opened a family reception centre at 40 John Street
Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond earlier described it as a "black day for Scotland."
Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to the bravery of the "ordinary Glaswegians" who rushed to help.
Man at crash scene Local people have gathered at the scene
The Queen has said her thoughts and prayers are with the victims of crash.
The Police Scotland helicopter which crashed was a twin-engine Eurocopter EC135 T2.
In a statement, Eurocopter said its experts were "on standby to support the investigation in every way possible".
"An accident investigation team from Eurocopter is on its way to Scotland to assist the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch and the BFU (German AAIB) in its efforts to investigate the cause of the accident," the statement said.
Helicopter operator Bond Air Services said it was working with the police and emergency services.
A statement added: "Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this tragic incident."
William Byrne, 45, from Coatbridge, who was in the pub when the helicopter came down, returned to the scene on Saturday morning.
"There was a loud bang. Then there was dust and the lights went out. It was surreal," he told BBC Scotland.
"We didn't know what had happened. At our side of the pub at least two people were trapped under the gantry. Myself and others lifted it up and managed to get them out. I spent some time with one injured man."
He added: "At our side of the pub I would say there were less than 10 people injured, mainly walking wounded, not seriously injured. One girl had clearly been hit on the head - she had a big bump.
"The other side of the pub took the brunt. Myself and my friends managed to get out without a scratch. Everyone helped everyone else to get out."

The Clutha Bar

  • Situated near the banks of Glasgow's River Clyde, The Clutha is one of Glasgow's oldest public houses
  • According to oldglasgowpubs.co.uk, the bar traded in the late 19th Century and over the years has been known as The Merchant, The Weemann's and The Pipinjay
  • A popular live music venue, The Clutha hosts various bands and artists as well as open mic events
  • The bar's Facebook page says it was voted as one of the top three pubs in Glasgow for live music with "something on every night"
  • Scottish comedian Billy Connolly has been known to frequent the pub
  • An application had been submitted to Glasgow City Council to create a roof terrace above the bar
About 250 people attended a special service at St Andrew's Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.
Archbishop Philip Tartaglia told worshipers: "We pray for those who have lost their lives, who are injured, the bereaved, and the emergency services and members of the public.
"We pray for our city of Glasgow, which is in mourning today."
One of The Clutha's owners, Saverio Petri expressed his "heartfelt sorrow to the people who have tragically lost their lives just going out to listen to some music".
He told the BBC that he was serving drinks in the bar when the crash happened.
He said: "I was hit with some falling debris on my head, my arm, my leg, my foot - which subsequently knocked me to the ground.
"In my situation, luckily from my point of view, is what saved me and, unfortunately, where others perished, because I'd fallen behind the bar and the debris was landing more so on the bar or bouncing off the bar and to the front of the bar.
"I managed to subsequently get up, I climbed over the debris I could. I got as many people as I could out of the bar.
"The customers in the pub were exceptional in assisting in getting the injured out of the pub."
A statement posted on The Clutha bar's Facebook page on Saturday stated: "Our thanks go out to all the goodwill messages and prayers for those who tragically lost their lives in the accident last night. An event beyond comprehension and belief.
"The customers who could showed the true spirit of Glasgow along with all the emergency services. Our heartfelt sorrow to all of the families of those who perished."
The band who were playing in the pub at the time of the crash, Esperanza, released a statement on their Facebook page.
Bassist Jess wrote: "Waking up and realising that it is all definitely horribly real. Despite the situation everyone was so helpful and caring of each other.
"The police, ambulances, firefighters all did a stellar job and continue to do so today in extremely difficult conditions."
Eddie Waltham, a former firefighter who had a friend inside the pub, told the BBC: "A roof joist came down and hit him and pushed him towards the window which is at the left side of the left door."
He added later: "My own reaction was to run straight up to the pub.
"It was amazing to watch just how people were trying so hard to get into this building."
Gordon Matheson, the leader of Glasgow City Council, said his heart went out to the families affected.
He also praised the response of ordinary people in the area before the emergency services arrived.
Map of the area
Mr Matheson said: "People who were in the pub, the people who were in the streets and who just helped out their fellow human beings who were out having a good time.
"It's Glasgow at its best you know, if people are in need the spontaneous response is to go to their help. And I want to pay great tribute to that and I'm very proud as leader of the city that that was the reaction. It doesn't surprise me."
First Minister Alex Salmond said: "This is a black day for Glasgow and Scotland but it is also St Andrew's Day and we can take pride in how we respond to adversity.

What do we know about crash helicopter?
"The response from our emergency services and citizens has been exemplary."
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This is a tragic event and our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends who lost a loved one last night.
"I want to thank the emergency services who worked tirelessly throughout the night and I also want pay tribute to the bravery of the ordinary Glaswegians who rushed to help.
"We have offered the Scottish government our support in any way we can and we are all wishing a speedy recovery to those who are injured."
Labour leader Ed Miliband described the crash as an "unimaginable horror".
He added: "My thoughts are with... the people of Glasgow who are an incredibly strong people, who showed, I think last night, in their reaction when the helicopter hit, a great bravery, a great courage, great calm in the midst of all this."
In 2002, a police Eurocopter EC-135 came down in a field in Ayrshire. All three people on board survived.

Black Friday 2013: U.S. Apple stores offer gift cards instead of discounts on iPad, Mac products

apple-black-friday-2013-desktop-laptop-tablet-ipad-macbook-imac-gift-card
Apple watchers woke up Thanksgiving morning to a new wrinkle in the company's typical Black Friday plans. Instead of the usual small discounts the company offered across most of its product lines in years past, the Australian Apple Store launched with gift cards being promoted for the purchase of many items instead. Then to confuse things more, European Apple Stores came online after midnight with the typical discounts, and not the gift cards.
What would Apple do in the U.S.? After the online store went down for a few hours this morning, it's returned with the same Black Friday gift card "deal" as greeted Aussie shoppers. In other words, there will be no sale prices for products sold at Apple stores this Black Friday, just gift cards.
If you're still willing to buy directly from Apple today, be prepared for further disappointment if you're planning to buy an iPhone 5c or 5s or the iPad mini with Retina display. That's because Apple isn't offering a gift for these popular new products. In comparison, Walmart will provide a $75 gift card if you pick up a 5c or 5s at its stores this weekend, and Target is offering a $75 card for an iPad mini with Retina display purchase.
You will receive a $75 Apple gift card if you buy an iPad Air, which is $25 less than what Target is offering on Black Friday if you purchase the tablet from that store. You can get a $50 gift card with the purchase of an original iPad mini or an iPad 2 -- Walmart offered a $100 gift card for an iPad mini purchase yesterday as part of its first round of doorbusters, while Best Buy matched it online earlier this week. Target is offering $75 gift cards for the first-generation iPad mini and $100 cards for an iPad 2.
Those looking for a new Mac can score a $150 Apple gift card, whether you're grabbing a new iMac or a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Note, however, that Best Buy is slashing the price on Macs for Black Friday, either by $150 or $200 depending on the configuration. Though a gift card is nice if you're planning on buying other in-store purchases, when it comes to systems, the lower price is probably preferable to most buyers.
The iPod is still around and kicking, and will be part of the Black Friday gift card fest. The iPod touch comes with a $50 card, while the latest iPod nano includes a $25 card. Some miscellaneous Apple products are also being offered with gift cards, ranging from the Apple TV ($25 card) to the AirPort Extreme and 2TB AirPort Time Capsule ($50).
Finally, there are some third-party accessories that Apple will sell with gift cards worth up to $75. Many will include a $25 card, such as the Nike+ FuelBand SE, Powerbeats by Dr. Dre headphones, and Mophie Juice Pack Air iPhone 5 battery case, while purchases of such items as the second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, GoPro HERO3+ camera, and Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones will come with a $50 card. Buying the $499.95 Bowers & Wilkins A5 AirPlay wireless music system nets you a $75 gift card.

It's Small Business

When Small Business Saturday started in 2010, it partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This made a whole lot of sense; as NTHP President Stephanie Meeks said at the time:
When we invest in small businesses, we are investing in Main Streets - the places that give our towns and cities a unique sense of place. By celebrating Small Business Saturday and shopping at independent businesses, everyone can play a part in strengthening our economy and supporting revitalization on our Main Streets.
Since then, it has become more and more clear that the best tool for greening our lives is Urbanity- building communities that you can get around in without a car. Where you can get what you need within walking or biking distance.
That's where small businesses come in to play. They are local, they support the community, and they make our main streets come alive. More importantly, much of the money you spend in the community stays in the community; One study in Michigan showed:
When West Michigan consumers choose a locally owned business over a non-local alternative, $73 of every $100 spent stays in the community. By contrast, only $43 of every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business remains in the community.
There are so many reasons for that; the buildings are often locally owned instead of by some distant big developer; the real estate and sales taxes stay in the community; the wages paid to staff are often higher; the staff are local too and spend their money in the community. Michael Shuman has written:
Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.
So forget Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday. Hop on your bike and support Small Business Saturday.

Why Ohio State vs. Michigan Is the Best Rivalry in College Football

Hi-res-157079214-brennen-beyer-of-the-michigan-wolverines-chases-after_crop_north Jamie Sabau/Getty Images
Rivalry—it incites the passions of fans and motivates legions of past and current players. It is the foundation upon which sports, and particularly college sports, is founded upon.
Regardless of where your alma mater sits in the landscape of college football, there will always be one or two teams that are the natural rivals. These are the teams to hate, while also doling out an equal measure of respect for the other side.
That's exactly what makes rivalries such a unique condition of the psychology known as "fandom." The competition, the pageantry, and the bragging rights all come together to make a memorable moment (or two) every single year for all college football teams.
But there is one rivalry that stands above them all. That rivalry is Ohio State vs. Michigan.
Or, as we call it in B1G country, The Game.
There are a number of reasons for OSU and UM to be standing atop the world when it comes to college football rivalries. Here are just a few, to go with the stuffing and sweet potatoes on your Thanksgiving and rivalry weekend.

Geographic Proximity = Rivalry
Jamie Sabau/Getty Images
The first and probably most important ingredient in starting a long-term rivalry is geographic proximity.
The closer two schools are to each other geographically, the more likely that recruits will be poached from each other and the more likely that the fan bases will overlap in key recruiting grounds.
Ohio State and Michigan share a border in a part of the country that remains somewhat significant for college football recruiting. While perhaps not the geographic closeness of in-state rivalries such as many others in the Big Ten (Indiana-Purdue, Illinois-Northwestern) or others down south (Alabama-Auburn, South Carolina-Clemson), a big state border provides plenty of crossover for fans and recruits.
The maxim "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" works well in the rivalry context. After all, how better to stab your rival in the back than to stay close enough to steal all the best talent in the region or state, at least when that talent can be convinced to come play at the rival school?
Some of the other major rivalries (Army-Navy, Notre Dame-USC) suffer from not having this geographic proximity.
In addition, Ohio State and Michigan are two of the largest universities in the U.S., which means the alumni bases of both schools span far and wide across this country and worldwide. Therefore, no matter which of these teams you root for, the rival fans are probably gathering just around the corner to cheer against your favorite team.
That makes The Game even more transcendent than some in-state rivalries where the schools are even more geographically close than Columbus is to Ann Arbor.

Series Competitiveness = Rivalry
Jamie Sabau/Getty Images
There are many factors that define what makes a rivalry, including important items such as geographical closeness and statewide bragging rights. However, most in-state rivalries like Michigan vs. Michigan State suffer from what is known as the "Big Brother Little Brother" mentality.
Where does this mentality come from? That answer is simple: it typically comes from a discrepancy in the series history. The reason "Little Brother" exists is because that team struggles to beat "Big Brother" on a consistent basis.
The wins for the smaller or less historic school are memorable, but the competitive disadvantage takes away from the magic of the rivalry. A well-balanced pair of rivals never knows exactly what the outcome will be, which makes the wins all the more sweet and the defeats all the more bitter.
Plus, the competitiveness also leads to the ability for upsets on a regular basis. If there's anything college football fans love, it is the upset.
Ohio State and Michigan currently stand at 58-45-6 in the series, with Michigan leading. Even discounting the one game from 2010 that OSU had to vacate, that is only a 14-game spread over 108 eligible games.
That is incredible competitive balance.
The statistic becomes even more impressive when considering the last 25 years, where the series is all tied up 12-12-1. Michigan also won the first 13 games of the series before Ohio State got up to speed with the historic Wolverine program, which means the series is tied 45-45-4 over the last 94 meetings.
It does not get more competitive than that.
Here are some of the other top rivalries in the Big Ten and nationally (currently being played), and how they stack up:
  • Alabama vs. Auburn: 42-34-1
  • Florida vs. Florida State: 34-21-2
  • Clemson vs. South Carolina: 65-41-4
  • Oregon vs. Oregon State: 64-46-10
  • USC vs. UCLA: 46-29-7
  • Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: 83-17-7
  • Texas vs. Oklahoma: 60-43-5
  • Michigan vs. Michigan State: 68-33-5
  • Minnesota vs. Wisconsin: 58-57-8 (closest that could be found with this much history)
  • Alabama vs. Tennessee: 50-38-7
  • Notre Dame vs. USC: 45-35-5
  • Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: 52-37-5
  • Mississippi vs. Mississippi State: 61-43-6
  • Purdue vs. Indiana: 72-37-6
Many of these top-tier rivalries also have relatively even spreads, but perhaps not to the same extent as OSU and Michigan, especially when considering recent history as well as series totals.
One interesting takeaway from the list above is that in-state rivalries are not generally as competitive as other rivalries, which may be caused by each state really being able to only support one football program at a top level over decades.
Nonetheless, the competitiveness makes for a rivalry, and there is plenty of competitive balance in The Game.

Program History = Rivalry
Jamie Sabau/Getty Images
Only a select handful of college football programs can boast 800 wins or more in the long history of the sport. When those top teams come together for regular games, it establishes the long-term rivalries and storylines that make college football great.
However, there are not a ton of rivalries among these top programs. In all, 11 football teams have 800 wins historically: Michigan, Yale, Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Harvard, Alabama, Penn and Tennessee.
Discounting the Ivy League teams, that leaves only eight programs to consider for these top historical rivalries. Out of those remaining teams, here is the list of rivalries with a significant amount of games:
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State: 109 meetings
  • Michigan vs. Notre Dame: 41 meetings (but inactive after 2013)
  • Texas vs. Oklahoma: 108 meetings
  • Nebraska vs. Oklahoma: 86 meetings (inactive since 2010)
  • Alabama vs. Tennessee: 95 meetings
That's it. A whopping five rivalries among these top eight football programs, and two of these have recently gone on leave thanks to conference realignment. That means those rivalries will simmer down and lose some meaning until picked up again regularly.
So outside of the Red River Rivalry and the "Third Saturday in October" rivalry in the SEC, there is no other rivalry that comes close to The Game for number of meetings between historically dominant programs. It means something when Texas and Oklahoma hit the field together, just like when Michigan and Ohio State step on the same field this weekend.
The Game is beginning to separate itself from the pack of rivalries, including the Iron Bowl.

Crazy Men and Traditions = Rivalry
Jamie Sabau/Getty Images
It takes a real special brand of rivalry to bring out the best and worst of the human condition. Some rivalries make typically rational and sane men act in crazy ways. Ohio State and Michigan playing football applies just that type of crazy.
One of the most storied coaches in college football, Woody Hayes, refused to refer to Michigan by name, preferring the moniker "That School Up North." Brady Hoke has now accepted this same challenge and never refers to OSU as "Ohio State," instead using the moniker "Ohio."
The governor of the state of Ohio, John Kasich, decided to ban use of the letter "M" this week in Ohio. This is just pure ridiculousness; all based on a football rivalry!
Ohio State students jump into a freezing cold lake full of duck poop every year during Michigan week. There are competitive blood drives between the schools on the week of the rivalry. Michigan students make a pilgrimage to a local cemetery to lay flowers at the grave sites of three great former Michigan coaches.
There are also more bouts of crazy in the history of this rivalry. When Ohio State and Michigan tied in 1973 and a secret vote of athletic directors decided who would go to the Rose Bowl that season (OSU), the controversy and bad blood boiled over and remains to this day.
Plus, this rivalry started with bad blood based on a short-lived war between these states called the Toledo War. Not many rivalries have a level of crazy built in from an actual civil war!
Kansas and Missouri is one of the few others, but it is not active now that Missouri is in the SEC.
While rivalry traditions and crazy events could be pulled up for every big game (the poisoning of the trees in Alabama-Auburn is another recent top moment of crazy), Ohio State and Michigan could certainly compete with the best in this field.

Big Stakes = Rivalry
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images
Another way that rivalries start up is when two great or dominant teams battle one another for national titles or conference championships on a regular basis.
Just take one look at the budding rivalry between Wisconsin and Ohio State to understand this phenomenon. A better example is the more well-established rivalry between LSU and Alabama, which has had huge stakes the past few seasons.
Ohio State and Michigan routinely play for these large stakes. At least one of the two teams is typically competing for a conference championship, if not a national championship.
The highlight of this was in 2006, when the teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 nationally and both were undefeated heading into The Game. That day, Ohio State won a chance to play for a BCS Championship as well as the Big Ten title and bragging rights.
Those are stakes that draw the entire country's attention.
Between the teams, there are 18 national titles and 76 Big Ten championships. No other team in the conference has more than 15 Big Ten titles, which means generally one or both of these programs has the hardware on the line in this season finale.
2013 is yet another example of this, as Ohio State is heading into a Big Ten Championship game and is trying to avoid having a season spoiled by Michigan. One only has to ask the Buckeye teams of 1993, 1995 and 1996 how it feels to have a dream season ruined in The Game.
Of course, all eyes are on the Iron Bowl this year as Auburn and Alabama meet with both teams playing for a SEC title and both teams ranked in the top 5 for the first time ever.
Those are the types of high stakes that make rivalries grand, but the Iron Bowl cannot boast the amount of meetings with those high stakes on the line that The Game can.
Thus, while every rivalry is one to enjoy and savor each college football season, Michigan and Ohio State stand above the rest.

Brawling = Rivalry
Michigan and Ohio State are good at brawling. Here's just a few examples, including a link to the 2013 edition of The Brawl (which led to three ejections).
