British diver and Olympic medallist Tom Daley revealed in a YouTube video posted Monday that he is dating a man and "couldn't be happier."

"I met someone," said the 19-year-old diver, "And that someone is a guy."

That simple revelation was enough to make news across the U.K. and for Daley's name to trend worldwide on Twitter.

Stonewall U.K. called Daley's message a "moving and inspiring video from @TomDaley1994. A role model for thousands of other young people."

Edward Lord, the chair of the Amateur Swimming Association, also responded to the video on Twitter. "We must support @TomDaley1994 in his decision to come out. He is very brave and as ASA Chairman I am proud of him," he wrote.

Broadcaster Gary Lineker is a former soccer player who was the top scorer in the 1986 World Cup when he played for England.

American actor Neil Patrick Harris felt some vindication in Daley's announcement.

Comedian Marcus Brigstocke thought some bad puns were due.

Indeed, Daley's Instagram account does have its share of beefcake poses like these that have made him an Olympic heartthrob.

But most of Daley's photos there are Instagram-typical shots of food, sunsets and cats, as well as selfies with friends and family.

Daley has described fellow Great Britain diver (and co-star of his U.K. reality show) Sophie Lee as his best friend.

Some folks on Twitter, including Independent columnist Owen Jones, thought that the "breaking news" treatment of Daley's relationship status was a bit much.

And others pointed out that headlines declaring that Daley had come out as gay were technically incorrect.

In the YouTube video, Daley said he has dated girls in the past and, "Of course, I still fancy girls, but right now I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier."

Not all the tweets were supportive, of course. There were messages along these lines, declaring that Daley's sexuality is ultimately irrelevant.

And there was a lot of homophobic abuse hurled Daley's way, too.

He's no stranger to detractors on Twitter, though. A British teen was arrested in 2012 for his "malicious" tweets to Daley after the diver finished off the podium in one event at the London Olympics.
